General Session – Supporting Critical Needs in an Emergency: Microgrid Performance During Severe Weather Events and Natural Disasters

Date & Time Thursday, April 17, 2025, 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
Location: Dallas Ballroom

Severe weather has increasingly challenged the Texas grid, threatening critical infrastructure and business operations. Houston, located in “Hurricane Alley,” faces frequent storms that demand constant emergency preparedness. This session will examine microgrid performance during three major Houston events: Winter Storm Uri, the May 2024 derecho, and Hurricane Beryl. Panelists will highlight how natural gas-powered microgrids support emergency response by keeping critical services online. Microgrids also ease stress on the grid, reducing the risk of broader outages. The discussion will cover lessons learned, resiliency challenges, and infrastructure vulnerabilities exposed by these storms. Attendees will gain insight into the essential role microgrids play during disasters.
